Toilet paper and other hygiene paper products are rising in price due to continuously increasing costs of raw materials, transportation, and energy. The increase has been ongoing for more than two years. For example, the price of paper raw material, which makes up approximately 70% of the final product cost, has more than doubled and continues to rise.
The first impulse for price increases was global anti-epidemic measures, which negatively impacted production volume and disrupted global and interstate transport chains. The paper and cellulose industry, including the tissue sector, is significantly globalized, and the Czech Republic is almost 100% dependent on imports. The Czech Republic’s high import dependency also applies to finished products. International transportation costs have more than doubled.
The rapid and unexpected increase in energy prices over the last year has significantly accelerated the pace of price growth. The paper industry is a highly energy-intensive sector, both in cellulose production and subsequent paper manufacturing. Unfortunately, high energy costs are forcing some manufacturers to reduce or even halt production, resulting in further price increases and reduced availability.
